What should you know before visiting the Arc de Triomphe?
Visitors to the Arc de Triomphe should consider these practical details before arriving:
- Underground tunnel access is mandatory: The monument stands in the center of a 12-lane roundabout with fast-moving traffic. The pedestrian tunnel (passage souterrain) provides the only safe route to reach the arc, accessible from the Champs-Élysées side or Avenue de la Grande Armée.
- Luggage policy: The monument provides no luggage storage facilities. Additionally, the site prohibits baby strollers inside the Arc de Triomphe.
- 284 spiral staircase steps lead to the rooftop terrace: No alternative exists for standard visitors, as the elevator is reserved exclusively for disabled visitors. Comfortable shoes are essential for the climb.
- The rooftop terrace provides 360-degree panoramic views: From the summit, visitors can see the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, the Louvre, and the twelve Parisian avenues radiating from the arc. An orientation table helps identify key landmarks.
- A small museum occupies the interior: The climb includes access to exhibits featuring old sketches, models, and original design details that document the monument's construction and history.
- The Eternal Flame Ceremony occurs daily at 18:30: This solemn ritual has continued every evening since 1923, rekindling the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the arc.
- Exterior carvings and inscriptions merit close examination: Spending at least 30 minutes studying the architectural details, relief sculptures, and engraved names enhances understanding of the monument's symbolism.
- Off-peak hours and weekdays reduce crowding: Visiting outside peak tourist times allows for a more comfortable experience, particularly on the narrow spiral staircase.
Plan your visit in advance
To properly plan a visit to the Arc de Triomphe, it is advisable for the visitor to take into account logistical aspects such as its operating hours and closing dates:

Opening hours
The Arc de Triomphe maintains seasonal operating hours to accommodate visitors throughout the year:
- From April 1 to September 30, the monument opens from 10:00 to 23:00 from Wednesday to Monday, and it opens at 11:00 on Tuesdays.
- From October 1 to March 31, the schedule changes slightly, with doors closing at 22:30.
These extended evening hours provide the opportunity to see the sunset and the city landmarks from the rooftop terrace during the summer or winter. Since the last entry occurs 45 minutes before closing, visitors must manage their arrival carefully to ensure access.
